The Kosmos Interplanetary Company (Космос) emerged during the tumultuous 22nd century as a powerful entity in the inner solar system, particularly within the orbits of Mercury and Venus, as well as the expansive region known as Cismercurial space or "Solar Space." Formed from the disillusionment and desire for autonomy from the Russian State-owned space company, Roscosmos, the investors and workers in the inner system banded together to declare a new state of being - Kosmos. Kosmos represents an ideology that equates freedom with unfettered capitalism and aggressive resource extraction.
History
The foundation of Kosmos can be traced back to the chaotic 22nd century, a period marked by a surge in space exploration and exploitation by various state and non-state actors from Earth. Discontent with the endless regulations of Artemesia and driven by the ambitions of billionaire oligarchs worldwide, these actors turned their gaze inwards toward the Sun. The final straw was what they termed "repressive" reforms by the Russian State on Earth, prompting a dramatic declaration of independence and the birth of Kosmos.
Governance and Ideology
Kosmos operates under a principle that freedom is synonymous with unrestricted capitalism and resource exploitation. This philosophy has attracted like-minded individuals and corporations, creating a powerful alliance focused on the economic potential of the inner solar system. The governance of Kosmos is heavily influenced by its corporate partners, who wield significant power and influence over its operations and policies.
Economic Ventures
Nitrogen Extraction on Venus
One of the most longstanding and profitable ventures of Kosmos is the nitrogen extraction economy on Venus. Centuries-old floating rigs dot the upper atmosphere of Venus, pumping nitrogen and carbon dioxide. These resources are crucial for habitat construction throughout the inner solar system, making them a valuable commodity.
Robotic Mining
Despite the challenges and costs associated with bringing resources off the surface of Venus, Kosmos maintains an extensive robotic mining operation. These machines brave the hellish conditions to extract metals and other valuable materials from the planet's surface.
Scientific Endeavors
Beyond its economic activities, Kosmos is also involved in various scientific and exploratory missions, particularly on Venus. Robotic rovers traverse the hostile terrain, gathering data and insights about Earth's enigmatic twin, continuing to push the boundaries of knowledge even into the 30th century.
Controversies and Criticisms
Kosmos has not been without its controversies. Critics argue that its relentless pursuit of profit comes at the expense of ethical considerations and long-term sustainability. Allegations of exploiting workers and prioritizing corporate interests over human and environmental welfare are common among its detractors.
